BOTOX Injections Help Control Underarm Sweat

Botox is known for its ability to treat wrinkles in your skin but there are some studies that have found a new way to use this unique product. Botox can also be used to control excessive underarm sweat and the effects can last up to two years.

This embarrassing condition is known as axillary hyperhidrosis in the medical field. People with axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweat) sweat up to four times more than a normal person. Your body does this to try to maintain normal body temperature. This condition affects more than one million people in the US alone.
Many people with this condition admit to having difficulty being in social situations. They also say it interferes with their daily activities.

Researcher and Professor of Dermatology and Vice Chairman of Dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dee Anna Glaser (MD) says that long-term findings “…demonstrate that Botox for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis over a two-year period is a safe and effective therapeutic option who otherwise struggle with substantial impairment.”

In July of 2004, the FDA approved Botox for treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis. This method is for patients who cannot resolve axillary hyperhidrosis with prescription topical or antiperspirants.

Lasting Relief through Botox Injection

In a three year study, researchers examined Botox injections for safety, effectiveness, and cost of repeated treatment on people with axillary hyperhidrosis as well as the impact on their personal quality of life.
In an earlier one-year clinical trial, 193 people were treated with Botox for hyperhidrosis and were given the option to continue their treatment every eight weeks if symptoms persisted.

Researchers found that Botox continued to be effective with repeated treatment. 82% of patients had up to a 75% reduction of sweat production in the follow-up study four weeks after treatment. By the second and third treatments, four weeks each, 79% of patients continued to experience the same degree of relief. The end result was that 94% of patients only needed four treatments of less of the Botox injections to control their axillary hyperhidrosis condition during their two-year study.
