Fillers / Injectables

Q:

Doctor,

I appreciate the blog and website. I’m considering getting some type of facial filler for the wrinkles and lines that have started to form on my face. I’m in my mid-thirties, and my age is starting to show. Also, I have done my share of boozing in my younger years, and I know alcohol sucks out the nutrients from my skin and makes me look older than I really am.

I’m off the booze now, thank God, and I’m trying to live a healthier lifestyle, both physically and emotionally.

My question is: what is Juvèderm and how is it different from Botox? Is it cheaper but the similar quality?

I don’t know much about the facial filler market and wanted to get a doctor’s opinion.

A:

I am glad to hear you are taking control of your life. And it is a good decision to give yourself a new look; it will boost your self esteem and energy level. Juvederm is a dermal filler and is from the group of dermal fillers called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in human cartilage and the human body is quite familiar with it, meaning it won’t be rejected.

Dermal fillers are used to replenish the wasted subcutaneous tissue, which may happen due to aging, alcoholism, addiction, or other systemic medical conditions. In some cases, the damaged skin effect lasts a few months and may need to be reinforced for better results.

Botox, on the other hand, works through weakening or paralyzing the unnecessary facial muscles that cause skin wrinkles. On Botox, you cannot frown and frown lines will be improved.

Depending on the situation, sometimes a combination of the two is the best way to go about it. I invite you to have a complementary consultation in our office and allow me to examine your face and then we will discuss the options we have.
